Bobby Caldwell played to devoted audiences in Japan throughout his career, and Live at the Blue Note Tokyo captures one of those nights. Recorded during a run of 2007 shows at the famous Tokyo jazz club and released on his own Starmine Records, it was the only live album issued in his lifetime.
The set draws on Bobby’s big-band years, with standards he had made his own on Blue Condition and Come Rain or Come Shine: “Beyond the Sea,” “Don’t Worry ’Bout Me,” “(I’ve Got You) Under My Skin,” “Come Rain or Come Shine” and “At Last.”
He was backed by his touring band and a full horn section, and he co-produced the recording with Richard McIntosh.
SoulTracks called the band “absolutely hot” and Bobby “one of the great soul/jazz singers of our time.”
